The Water You Drink Is Only as Clean as Your Tank

Most people never think about what's growing inside their water storage tank. But sludge, algae, bacteria, and sediment accumulate silently over months — and every glass of water, every shower, every cooked meal passes through it. Professional tank cleaning is not a luxury. It's the most direct thing you can do for your family's water quality.

Why Water Tank Cleaning Matters

Your Water Supply Starts at the Tank. So Does the Risk.

In most Indian homes and apartment buildings, municipal water goes through a series of storage tanks before it reaches your tap — an underground sump, an overhead tank, and sometimes additional storage at the flat level. Each of these tanks, if left uncleaned, becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, algae, sediment, rust particles, and in some cases biological contaminants that no household water filter can reliably remove.

Studies by the Bureau of Indian Standards recommend that domestic water tanks be cleaned and disinfected at least twice a year. In practice, most residential buildings clean theirs once a year at best — and many have never been professionally cleaned at all. The consequences show up quietly: persistent stomach issues, water that smells off, sediment in bathroom tiles, and household members who seem to catch waterborne illnesses more often than they should.

Professional water tank cleaning isn't simply about making the tank look clean inside. It's about removing the accumulated biofilm, disinfecting every surface with food-grade chemicals, testing the output water quality, and certifying that what comes out of your taps is actually safe to use.

⚠️   What Builds Up in an Uncleaned Tank
Sediment & Sludge
Minerals, rust, and mud settle at the base over time — entering your water supply with every draw
Bacterial Biofilm
Invisible but dense colonies of E.coli, Salmonella, and Legionella coat tank walls and pipes
Algae Growth
Green and black algae thrive in poorly sealed or infrequently cleaned tanks — producing toxins and bad odour
Rust & Scale
Oxidising metal tanks and pipe connections leach rust and limescale that discolour and contaminate water
Insect & Pest Debris
Poorly sealed tanks allow mosquitoes, lizards, and insects to enter — introducing biological contamination
Our Cleaning Process

How We Clean Your Water Tank

1
Initial Inspection & Water Sample

Before we begin, our technician inspects the tank condition, checks for cracks or seal issues, and takes an initial water sample to document contamination levels and guide the cleaning approach.

2
Water Draining

The tank is drained completely. For overhead tanks, water is drained down. For underground sumps, we use submersible pumps to empty the tank fully before any cleaning begins.

3
Sludge & Sediment Removal

All accumulated sludge, sediment, algae, and debris is manually removed and safely disposed of. This is the step most cleaning services skip — we never do.

4
High-Pressure Scrubbing

All internal surfaces — walls, floor, inlet and outlet pipes — are scrubbed with high-pressure jet washing and long-handled brushes to remove biofilm, scale, and algae from every surface.

5
Food-Grade Disinfection

A WHO-approved, food-grade chlorine solution is applied to all internal surfaces at the correct concentration. The tank is then refilled to allow the disinfectant to contact all surfaces before final draining.

6
Final Rinse & Refill

The tank is thoroughly rinsed to remove all disinfectant residue, checked for adequate residual chlorine levels, sealed properly, and refilled with supply water.

7
Post-Clean Water Quality Test

We collect a post-cleaning water sample and test for key indicators including bacteria, pH, turbidity, and residual chlorine. A written report is provided confirming your water is now safe.

Tank Types We Service

We Clean Every Type of Water Storage Tank

Different tanks are made of different materials and have different access points, contamination risks, and cleaning requirements. Our technicians are trained on all types.

Plastic / PVC Tanks

The most common type in Indian homes. Prone to algae growth on inner walls due to translucency. Requires gentle scrubbing with non-abrasive tools to avoid surface scratching that encourages bacterial adhesion.

RCC / Concrete Tanks

Common in older buildings and underground sumps. Concrete surfaces are porous and require thorough high-pressure scrubbing to remove biofilm from the surface texture, plus crack inspection and sealing where needed.

Stainless Steel Tanks

Typically used in commercial and industrial settings. While more hygienic than plastic or concrete, they still accumulate sediment, scale, and biofilm at joints and inlets. Cleaned using acid descaling and disinfection protocols.

Fibreglass Tanks

Common in large apartment buildings and commercial complexes. Fibreglass surfaces can develop resin degradation over time. We clean with pH-appropriate solutions and inspect internal surfaces for signs of structural degradation.

Rainwater Harvesting Tanks

RWH storage tanks collect first-flush debris, airborne particulates, and rooftop runoff — all of which settle as sludge. Regular cleaning and filter replacement is essential for these tanks to remain an effective water conservation resource.

Industrial & Process Water Tanks

Large-volume tanks in industrial facilities, cooling towers, and manufacturing plants require specialised de-scaling, chemical neutralisation, and confined-space entry procedures. Our trained industrial cleaning team handles these with full safety compliance.

Why AKS Facilities

Why Families & Buildings Across India Trust Us

Water safety isn't something to take chances with. Here's what makes AKS Facilities the consistent choice for tank cleaning across thousands of homes and commercial properties.

Post-Clean Water Quality Testing

Unlike most cleaning services that simply clean and leave, we test the water after every clean. You receive a written water quality report confirming bacterial levels, pH, and safety indicators — so you have documented proof, not just our word.

WHO-Approved, Food-Grade Chemicals

We use only WHO-approved, food-grade disinfectants at clinically correct concentrations. No harsh industrial chemicals enter your drinking water supply. The disinfectant is fully rinsed before refill and residual levels are verified.

Our tank cleaning technicians are trained in confined-space entry safety, water contamination biology, and chemical handling. Every team member is background-verified and works under a certified supervisor on every job.

Full Documentation & Compliance

We provide a detailed cleaning report, photographic documentation, and water quality certificate after every service — meeting the requirements of housing societies, municipal bodies, and corporate compliance teams.

Minimal Disruption to Water Supply

We coordinate with your building manager and schedule cleaning to minimise the time residents are without water. Most overhead tank cleans are completed within 3–4 hours; sumps within 4–6 hours.

Fully Insured & Responsible

All our services are covered by comprehensive liability insurance. In the unlikely event of accidental damage to your tank, fixtures, or water infrastructure, you are fully covered — no disputes, no delays.

Warning Signs

8 Signs Your Water Tank Needs Cleaning Right Now

Your tank won't tell you when it's contaminated. But it does leave clues. If you're experiencing any of these, don't wait — call us today.

Water Smells Musty or Chlorine-Heavy

A musty, earthy, or unusually strong chlorine smell in your tap water is a classic sign of algae growth or bacterial activity inside your storage tank.

Discoloured or Yellowish Water

Yellow, brown, or rusty coloured water indicates sediment, rust particles, or algae being disturbed from the tank floor and entering your supply — a direct health risk.

Recurring Stomach Illnesses

If household members experience recurrent stomach upsets, diarrhoea, or nausea with no other obvious cause, contaminated storage water is one of the first things to investigate.

Green or Black Staining in Tanks

If you can see algae growth or black mould on the interior walls of your tank during a visual inspection, your water quality is already seriously compromised.

More Than 6 Months Since Last Clean

Even if there are no visible signs, bacterial biofilm builds up steadily in any storage tank. If it has been 6 months or more, a professional clean is due — regardless of appearances.

Sediment in Taps & Filters

If you're regularly cleaning sediment from tap aerators, washing machine filters, or water purifier pre-filters, that debris is coming from your storage tank and indicates the tank base is full of sludge.

New Building or Post-Renovation

New construction leaves cement dust, pipe scale, and chemical residue in tanks. After any renovation work, a professional clean and water quality test is essential before the water is safe for drinking or cooking.

Evidence of Pests or Insects

Finding mosquito larvae, small insects, lizard droppings, or animal debris in or near an open tank requires immediate professional cleaning and disinfection before the water is used again.

FAQs

Honest Answers to Your Questions

Before you book, here are the things people ask us most — answered plainly.

How often should a water tank be professionally cleaned?
The Bureau of Indian Standards and most municipal guidelines recommend a minimum of twice per year — once before summer and once before monsoon season. For schools, hospitals, restaurants, and commercial buildings, quarterly cleaning is advised. For homes with young children or elderly residents, twice yearly is the safe minimum.
Will residents be without water during the cleaning?
Yes, but briefly. For overhead tanks, water supply is interrupted for approximately 3–5 hours. We recommend scheduling the clean in the morning so tanks are refilled and water is restored by afternoon. For underground sumps, the supply interruption depends on your building's backup capacity — we plan this with your building manager in advance.
Are the cleaning chemicals safe for drinking water tanks?
Absolutely. We use only WHO-approved, food-grade disinfectants — typically chlorine-based solutions at the concentration specified for potable water disinfection. The disinfectant solution is fully rinsed out before the tank is refilled, and we verify residual chlorine is within safe drinking water limits before handover.
What does the water quality test cover?
Our post-cleaning water test checks for total coliform bacteria, E.coli, residual chlorine, pH level, turbidity, and TDS (total dissolved solids). You receive a written report with all parameter readings, which can be used for compliance purposes or submitted to your RWA or building management.
Do you service STPs and ETPs in apartment complexes?
Yes. We provide complete STP and ETP cleaning and maintenance services including de-sludging of all chambers, aeration tank cleaning, filter bed maintenance, biological media inspection and replacement, and mechanical servicing of pumps and blowers. We can provide both one-time cleaning and annual maintenance contracts.
Can you clean a rainwater harvesting system?
Yes. RWH system cleaning includes collection tank draining and scrubbing, first-flush diverter cleaning, filter media replacement or cleaning, pipe flushing, and a full system inspection. We also advise on improvements to your RWH setup if the system isn't collecting or storing water efficiently.
How long does a typical tank clean take?
A single overhead tank (1,000–5,000 litres) typically takes 2–3 hours to clean completely. An underground sump takes 3–5 hours depending on size and condition. Large apartment complex tanks or heavily contaminated tanks may take longer — we'll give you a time estimate during booking once we know the size and situation.
Do you offer AMC for housing societies and commercial buildings?
Yes. Our Annual Maintenance Contracts for water tanks, STPs, and water quality systems are available for housing societies, commercial complexes, hotels, hospitals, and industrial facilities. AMC clients receive scheduled cleaning, priority emergency response, water quality certificates, and a dedicated account manager. Contact us for a custom quote.
